World War II The Blitz By Cameron McIntosh
The Blitz • The word Blitz comes from the German word Blitzkrieg which means lightning war. • Air raid shelters were needed for safety but the Government wouldn’t build you a shelter. The local council would dump the bits at your doorstep and leave you to get on with it yourself! See the model.
The Blitz • A bomb shelter which was used for safety from the German bombers.
The Blitz • 10th of July 1940 the first of the large air raids. This is the real start of the battle of Britain in the skies. • 13th of August 1940 German air raids lasting continuously for 2 days. • 24th of August 1940 Germans bomb London by mistake after Hitler told them not to, so the British bomb Berlin in revenge… so the Germans bomb London… and so it goes on.
The Blitz • Here is a recount of a night in the blitz; As soon as we heard the air raid siren we started to run to the bomb shelter but I slipped and fell. I landed facing up and I could see the Nazi bombers coming towards us, I was petrified. I lay there for a few seconds until I suddenly realized I had to get away so I jumped up and started to sprint to the bomb shelter. Fortunately we were safe that night.
The Blitz • The 6th of August 1945, VE day finally the end of WWII.
