SETS OF CHROMOSOMES • DIPLOID (2n) • Has full number (2 sets, one from mom and one from dad) of chromosomes (2 in each homologous pair). • Total number of chromosomes = 46 for humans • Body cells • HAPLOID (1n) • Has ½ the number (1 set, one from either mom or dad) of chromosomes (only 1 from each homologous pair). • Total number of chromosomes = 23 for humans • Sex cells (gametes)
TWO TYPES OF CHROMOSOMES • SEX CHROMOSOMES- (Total for humans= 2) • Determines the sex of an organism; may also carry genes for other characteristics. • Either X or Y • XX = female XY = male • AUTOSOMES- (Total for humans= 44) • All other chromosomes in an organism. • Contain all other genes. • KARYOTYPE-picture of a person’s chromosomes; arranges chromosomes in pairs from largest to smallest; can be used to determine sex or presence of a chromosomal abnormality.
