6. SDUHSD Criteria forEnglish Honors Enrollment English (3 of 4) • “A” in College Prep English from previous year (2 semesters) • STAR: 95th percentile or higher on ELA Language or Reading portion • California Standards Test (CST): Advanced • 5 or 6 on District Writing Assessment (DWA)

7. Key Expectations for English Honors • Approximately 4 to 5 hours of homework per week, depending on length and involvement of the assignment • Possess independent critical thinking skills and the ability to function at a faster pace • Has strong work ethic, self-motivated

8. SDUHSD Criteria for Math Honors Enrollment Math (2 of 3) • “A” in previous honors math course (both semesters) • STAR/California Standards Test Mathematics (CST) level: Advanced and STAR score: 95% or > on Math portion • Meet cutoff score on Math Placement Test

9. Key Expectations for Math Honors • Average of 1.5 to 2 hours outside of class on homework for each class period • 1 ½ to 3 sections from the text per class, one chapter every two to three weeks – may also include projects • Honors courses require honors-level attitude, work ethic, and responsibility

10. What is Advanced Placement? • College level coursework offered on a high school campus • Courses that meet CSU and UC eligibility requirements • Students receive a weighted grade

12. Benefits of Enrolling in AP Courses • Most Colleges and Universities accept AP courses and apply credit based on the exam taken and the score received • Saves students and parents money

13. Benefits for Students • Studies show the type of courses students took in high school was more important than test scores or grade point averages. • Students are significantly more likely to attain a college degree if they have had AP experience.

14. FAQ’s:Typical characteristics of successful students… • Passionate and/or exceptionally strong in that content area • Great work ethic and self-motivated • well-organized • Comfortable asking questions, self-advocating • Works well both independently and in a group.

15. FAQ’s:What should my student take into account? • His/her interests, other courses enrolled in and extra-curricular or outside activities • Students should be prepared to make a commitment for an entire academic year, as space may not be available for a level change into a college prep course.
