Unit 12 Part 1 Notes The Biomes
Biomesare a group of ecosystems with similar climates (temperature and rainfall) and organisms.
Climate and Biomes • Climateis the typical weather patterns over a long period of time. • Refers to temperature and precipitation.
Types of Biomes Terrestrial • Located on land • Taiga • Tundra • Temperate Forest • Tropical Rain Forest • Deciduous Forest • Desert • Grassland Aquatic • Located in water • Marine • Freshwater • Estuary (where fresh and salt water mix)
Tropical Rain Forest • Warm temperature • High amount of rainfall • Dense vegetation • Found close to the equator • Most species rich biome • Trees are arranged in layers which provides habitats for the wide range of organisms.
Desert • Dryest biome • Sparse to little plant life • Little precipitation • Plants and animals have adaptations that allow them to prevent water-loss • Ex, cacti have a thick waxy covering and spines; animals are noctural
Grassland • Also called “savanna” • Rich soils, grasses, few trees • Have a dry season • Receive more rain than desert=more plants • Ideal for growing grains (wheat, rye, oats)
Temperate Forest • Also called “deciduous” forest • Contain hardwood trees that lose their leaves in the fall. • Typically have warm summers, and cold winters • Precipitation can be in the form of snow or rainfall
Tundra • Dry and cold • Soil is nutrient poor which limits the types of species it can support • Beneath top soil layer is permafrost- layer of soil frozen year-round • No trees, plants are cold-drought resistant • Animals have adaptations to resist cold (blubber, thick fur)
Taiga • Abundance of coniferous trees • Warmer and wetter than the tundra, but still cold • Usually no permafrost • Provides for more species diversity than the tundra
Freshwater Biomes • Algae is the most abundant plant because sunlight has to be there in order for photosynthesis to occur. • Examples: ponds, lakes, rivers, streams • Animals include those that live in the water and at the shore.
Marine Biomes • Phytoplankton are the main producers. • Examples: ponds, lakes, rivers, streams • Animals include those that live in the water and at the shore. • Includes oceans, estuaries (places where salt & freshwater mix), and coral reefs (occur in shallow water).
