  1. SQ3R Note Taking Strategy By: Brittany Campbell and Ebony Norman

  2. Intro • Using SQ3R provides a different method of reading textbooks that will most likely enhance understanding and preservation of the material. • Its not a quicker way to read the chapter in a book, but its likely to reduce the amount of studying time.

  3. SQ3R • Survey • Question • Read • Recite • Review

  4. Survey • This step helps gather necessary info to focus on the chapter and formulate questions for yourself • You can read the title • Read the intro • Read each bold face heading and subheading • Review and pictures or graphs • Review any reading aids in the chapter

  5. Question • Turn boldface headings into one or more questions and write the question down on the left side of your paper • Why should I do these steps?

  6. Read • Reading the section fills in the info around the material structures you have been building by surveying the chapter and developing questions about the chapter • Read one section at a time • Add more questions if necessary • Don’t worry too much about the details

  7. Recite • Reciting the material helps you concentrate and learn as you read • When do you recite? • How do you recite? • What if you can’t remember the answers to your own questions? • When you can answer your own questions, go back to step 2

  8. Review • This step helps you refine your mental organization of the material you just covered. • How do you review? • What if you’ve forgotten some of your answers?

  9. What Does it Look Like?

  10. When do you use SQ3R? • SQ3R is useful with a lot of text books, but for which ones is it less likely to help? • When should you use it? • Does it matter how the teacher uses the text book in class?

  11. Some additional Strategies • Plan ahead and start early • Plan to read each chapter before its discussed in class • Identify the info in the chapter you don't understand and plan to talk with your teacher after class
