Vietnam • Southeast Asia • France controlled, along with Laos and Cambodia • Called French Indochina
Ho Chi Minh • Nationalist • HATED French imperialist control • Thought COMMUNISM was best way to fight it
Japan • During WWII, Japan helped Minh and other nationalists to drive French out • Japan wanted to rule however • Minh does not want that either; he wants Vietnam to be independent • Japan lost WWII, so Minh declared Vietnam independent
France Says Wait a Minute • France thought Vietnam still belonged to them • France fights for it back • U.S. aided France because of Vietnam wanting communism • Domino Theory: too many Asian countries are becoming communist; can’t have another
Vietnam vs. France • Vietminh: Vietnamese nationalists (Minh) • Used Guerilla Warfare to fight French • French had to surrender in 1954
End Result • Vietnam was temporarily divided into North and South Vietnam • North Vietnam: Communist; led by Ho Chi Minh • South Vietnam: Democracy; led by Ngo Dinh Diem • Wanted Vietnam to eventually be united again in 2 years
Time to Unite? • Diem was a HORRIBLE leader in the south • Appointed family members as leaders; but U.S. still backed him • Minh was loved in the north, and since Diem was so horrible, some in the south also loved Minh • As a result, Diem refused to allow the south to vote on unification sensing he would lose • U.S. backed Diem’s decision!!
National Liberation Front • Southern Vietnamese people who fought Diem • Vietcong: communist guerillas who helped South fight
Vietcong vs. Diem • U.S. and Eisenhower back Diem and the South still • Military aid was sent by the U.S. • When Kennedy became president, he sent even more military advisers by 1961
Diem’s Mistake • Diem’s soldiers fired on Buddhist demonstrators • U.S. became enraged with that; especially when Buddhist monks set themselves on fire which appeared on T.V. and newspapers • Diem lost U.S. support
November, 1963 • A group of South Vietnamese generals took over the government and killed Diem • South Vietnam now experienced even more unrest and an uncertain future • The U.S. however, still does not want communism in the south
