CPR Graduation Requirement Bill True or False • This requirement applies to current high school students. • Students are required to attain CPR certification. • Teachers of CPR are required to be certified CPR instructors. • This policy changes the NC SCOS for Healthful Living.
HB 837: Completion of CPR by Students Required • New graduation requirement for NC students • Effective for class of 2015 and beyond • Signed into law July 26, 2012 • Collection of data begins this year
The Four Required Components of CPR Instruction • Awareness • 911 • Compressions • AED
Awareness • Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death in adults. • CPR doubles a person’s chance of survival from sudden cardiac arrest. • Recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiac events/sudden death emergencies (i.e. – heart attack, drowning, electrocution, and asphyxiation).
911 • Secure the scene. • Locate nearest phone. • Provide EMS with current address. • Provide phone number for EMS to contact.
Compressions • Look, listen, and feel for any signs of breathing. • Position victim for compressions. • Ensure that compressions are performed at a depth of two inches and at a rate of 100 per minute. • Continue compressions until the victim begins breathing again or emergency personnel arrives.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Knowledge • Determine location of nearest AED. • Turn on AED and follow automated instructions. • Adjust victim’s clothing to enable pad-to-skin contact. • Open pad package and plug in pad connector. • Peel pad backing and apply both pads. • Wait and stand clear as AED performs analysis. • If instructed, press shock button.
