What is Confirmation? • The strengthening and fullness of the Holy Spirit already received in Baptism (YouCat, 203) • Calls us to a greater participation in the mission of Jesus and the Church (CCC, 1285) • Imprints an “indelible mark” on the soul making him or her a witness of Christ (CCC 1304)
My Role as the Candidate?C-H-O-S-E-N • Commit by actively participating in Confirmation commitments • Help the physically and spiritually poor through service hours and a missionary spirit • Open your heart to God by praying on a daily basis • Receive the Sacraments often by attending weekly Mass and going to Reconciliation monthly, at a minimum • Evaluate your understanding and knowledge of the faith, ask questions in order to be a witness • Nurture your gifts and remain an active part of the community after Confirmation
Confirmation Curriculum • Adopted a new curriculum, Chosen (see video) • To understand that God has chosen them to be a witness to the faith through Confirmation • Students receive their own book to keep and use as reference & personal journal • Parent and Sponsor Guides included, serve as excellent resources and provide “Conversation Starters”
Requirements • Attendance at all Confirmation events (see calendar) • Weekly Mass attendance • Confirmation Prep • Fulfillment of any take-home requirements • Service Hours (15 hours) • Discernment Interview with small group • Letter to Bishop • Confirmation Reflection Paper • All candidates are highly encouraged to attend middle school youth ministry
What Is My Role As a Parent? • Be the primary educator • Represent the Catholic Church by example • Receive the Sacraments • Pray with and for your child • Encourage your child to personally consider the commitment of Confirmation
Discussion with Candidate • As the candidate, why do you want to be confirmed? • What is the biggest struggle you have in your faith journey? • What encouragement do you need to go through this process?
How To Choose a Sponsor? • No less than 16 years of age • Received Baptism, Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation • Must know and practice the fundamental truths of the faith and receive the Sacraments regularly • Must be a member of the Catholic Church and canonically free to carry out this office • Must not be the father or mother of the candidate
Choosing a Confirmation Name • Baptismal Name • Confirm the name received at Baptism • Confirmation Name • Choosing a saint to model after
Confirmation Retreat • Candidates are required to attend the weekend retreat on March 20-22, 2015 at Camp Hammer in Boulder Creek • Sets the spiritual tone for Confirmation • Information about retreat will be provided as the date gets closer • Chaperons needed!
Required Paperwork • Church Record Form & Retreat Permission Slip/Payment, due October 19, 2014 • Service Hours (15 hrs), due April 17, 2014 • Confirmation Reflection Paper, due April 17 2014 • Letter to the Bishop, due April 17, 2014 • Note that all paperwork is available online
