  1. Kick Off MeetingIsland of San Servolo - Venice, Italy11th to 13th February 2008 LOGISTICS SYSTEM AND IT STATE-OF-THE-ART, CRITICAL ISSUES IN THE FISHING LOGISTICS SYSTEM Dr. Luca Stocco

  2. Agenda • Fiorital S.r.l. in figures • More about Fiorital S.r.l. • Fiorital Supply Chain • Information Technology (IT): state-of-the-art • IT critical issues • Possible improvements: EURIDICE role

  3. Fiorital s.r.l. in figures • Fiorital has been European leader in the fresh fish industry for last 40 years • Recently its turnover grew from 25 mil. € in 1996 to 207 mil. € in 2006 (+850%) processing about 37 mil. kg of fish • From its Venetian plant of more than 15.000 square meters Fiorital manages its whole activity employing 150 people working in a dynamic environment 24h/7days.

  4. More about Fiorital S.r.l. • Fiorital manages fresh fish processing, packing and distributes its products all over Italy and Europe. • The Dalmare production department in our Venetian plant performs processing and packing activities: the fish is eviscerated, scaled, cleaned and packed, as a whole or in practical portions, in a modified atmosphere. • Fiorital is the main European crustacean and Nile perch fish supplier

  5. Fiorital Supply Chain • Daily supply of selected fresh fish from Italian and foreign markets (i.e. France, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Argentine, Brasil, Canada, U.S.A., Africa, Australia, Sry Lanka, The Maldives, Vietnam). From European markets the fish is imported by refrigerated trucks. From non-Eu countries the fish is imported by cargo flights and then delivered by refrigerated trucks. • Goods are delivered in a short time after receiving and processing

  6. IT: state-of-the-art • The recently introduced ERP system helps to integrate different functions (processing, warehousing, logistics, etc.) • Traceability system is compliant with the regulation about fish products; tracing fish is important to give information about the product origin, its manifacturing, its processing and to avoid health problems and quality degradation. • Information is initially printed on labels or commercial documents, after being registered over on paper.

  7. IT: state-of-the-art (2)

  8. IT: state-of-the-art (3) Information on labels concerns: • Product commercial name • Scientific name • Production process • Origin • Batch number • Supplier • Packing date • Net weight • Expiration date • Storage conditions (temperature) • Health Authorization number

  9. IT: state-of-the-art (4) Printed information concerns: • Batch number • Health origin certificate • UE introduction certificate • Performed chemical and biological analysis • Production/fishing process • Storage / transportation temperature • Airport arrival date • Airline name • Airport temporary warehousing • Vehicle transporting goods from airport to internal and external warehouses

  10. IT: state-of-the-art (5) • Via ERP it is possible to have detailed information about: • Items sold (batch number, product type, customers, destination) • Customers • Vehicle performing transportation to customers

  11. IT critical issues • A critical issue is represented by the fact that on the boxes there aren’t labels with an EAN code nor identification tag, so the data entry of the inbound products at Fiorital warehouses are entered manually and not automatically performed (i.e. by optical scanner). Therefore the risk is to manage uncorrect data entry and consequently to create unavailable products storage in the transit warehouses.

  12. Possible improvements: EURIDICE role The new technology should help as follows: • Obtaining information when and where needed. • Solving misalignments between information flow and the actual flow of goods. • Integrating information about the goods from the fish producer until the final recipient.
