Project Summary • Leverage on and enhance existing training structure for GOES • Nationally – VISIT and SHyMet programs • Internationally • WMO Virtual Lab Focus Group • WMO Training Events • Results: • Informed user capable of making decisions on use of GOES channels and products • International capacity building
3. Motivation/Justification • Supports NOAA Mission Goal(s): • Weather and Water • Commerce and Transportation • Climate Enhanced training will prepare forecaster/manager on how to utilize new imagery and products to provide services in these areas. • Supports NOAA commitments to WMO Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites • Training expectations for satellite operators addressed in paper 17 from the CGMS-XXXII congress, 2004 • Support of the virtual laboratory for training • Supports NOAA commitments to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS)
4. Methodology • For select cases (severe weather, hurricanes, fog, fire, volcanic eruptions, etc.) provide examples on use of GOES (10, 11, 12) imagery and products • Ongoing development of satellite climatology for Costa Rica and Barbados • Provide support and training materials as appropriate for monthly international weather briefings. • Provide support and training materials for the CoEs in WMO regions III and IV • 2-week WMO/GEOSS workshops to be held at the CoEs in Brazil and Argentina in March 2008. • other local workshops and training events
5. Summary of Previous Results • VISIT is an established distance interactive online training program within the NWS. • Recently developed SHyMet program also utilized by NWS • Interaction with the Costa Rica and Barbados CoEs since 1996 • satellite climatology archives since 1997 • Monthly international weather briefings via the internet are established for Central and South America and the Caribbean. On average, participants from 15-20 countries join in each month. • Success in recent virtual global High Profile Training Event in October 2006. • 4 core lectures delivered in English and Spanish • global estimate: 4000 participants from 100 countries • regionally: 128 participants from 21 countries • Activities utilize VISITview tool and voice through phone (national) or internet (international). TV mode is also available.

Expected Outcomes • Workforce that is knowledgeable about imagery and products offered on GOES and capable of making informed weather decisions. • International activities – completed briefing sessions and training events. A web page will list the activities and include: • summaries of monthly sessions • agenda and highlights of training events • case examples as appropriate • A conference paper will be written describing the satelllite climatologies. • A conference paper will be written describing the training activities.
