  2. Back to School Night Science Warm-Up • Can you use observation skills to guess what’s in the bag? • Don’t forget your child’s name. • They could earn a prize!

Introduction • Mrs. Sweeney • University of Delaware • Elementary Education Degree (K-8) • Certification in Elementary, Middle School Mathematics, and Middle School Science • Enjoy incorporating technology into classroom activities and instruction. • 5th year teaching at Haverford Middle School

  4. At your table… • Index cards on the table: • Give me the tools to optimize your child’s learning experience! • Science Resources: • Lab booklet, text books, student workbook, etc.

  5. Science Curriculum • UNITS OF STUDY • Micro-Life • Rocks, Minerals and Soils • Weather and Atmosphere • Energy

  6. 6th Grade Science • Inquiry-based program: • Students must use scientific questioning as a tool for problem solving. • Involve hands-on activities: • Allow students to discover information through exploration.

  7. Materials • Science binder divided into five sections • Warm-ups • Notes/Vocabulary • Lab booklet • Handouts • Homework • Science lab booklet (based on the current unit being studied, 3-hole punched and kept in science binder) • Pencil case (including pencils, colored pencils and glue sticks) • Folder to take home and bring back if homework

  8. Assessment • Assessed in a variety of ways: • Test and quizzes • Projects • Analysis question responses • Notebook checks • Daily participation • Grades are weighted: • 80% - Tests, quizzes, and long term assignments • 20% - homework, classwork, and short term assignments • Midterm and Final: • The midterm will assess content covered during quarters one and two. • The final will assess content covered during quarters three and four.

  9. Homework • Homework is not given frequently in science. • If given… • It is meant to serve as practice, review or an extension of material covered in class. • If no assignment is given, students can always review vocabulary and notes in theirbinder. • Check my website • Please check your son’s/daughter’s assignment book nightly.
