Community Gardening Project Award News Article Ramah Navajo School Board Lto R: ValentinaWhite, Oreos Eriacho, Louise Ingraham, Jolene Luna, Mr.JimToya PineHill Health Center– DiabetesPrevention Program receives theAlbuquerqueArea IndianHealth ServiceHealthPromotion Disease Prevention– Tribal Award, April 03, 2009 TheRamahNavajoHeartSaverProgram-CommunityGardeningProjectwasawardedtheHPDPTribalAward duringtheHonorAwardCeremonyon April 03, 2009 at theRoute 66 Hotel and Casino inLaguna,NM. TheHeartSaverProjectimplementedthegardeningprojectin2005asoneofthecommunity-basedactivities. Eachyear,theprogramprovidestheAbundantHarvestGardenboxesto10newfamiliesthatrequesttostarta garden. Over the last 4 years, we have increased from 10 to 64 boxes in the community. In addition to purchasing the garden boxes, the program works closely with outside resource programs to have the seeds donated. Several gardening workshops, cooking demonstrations/taste sessions have been attended by communitymembersandgardeners. Through the gardening project, we promote obesity and diabetes prevention through increased activity and healthiereating.
