    1. Exploring Action Planning RIDE – Office of Progressive Support and Intervention SALT – School Accountability for Learning and Teaching

    2. What is Action Planning? Defines and organizes priorities for school improvement Provides measurable goals to monitor progress Begins with student learning Develops plans written by a representative body of the school Action planning is a process that lets schools make specific plans to improve student learning. This should be the driving force behind needed changes in student learning and teaching practices. Action planning helps to spread the ‘pockets of excellence’ in the school and makes very clear what the school’s priorities are and what the school is working towards. 4. The Action Planning Process Is a continuous cycle Conducted on an ongoing and annual basis Can connect to the professional development planning process Does not end when the action plan is written. Does not end when the action plan is written.

    5. The Action Planning Process Steps to Action planning 1. Conduct self-study 2. Determine priorities for improving student learning from the self-study 3. Use these priorities to form the basis of action plans 4. Develop, implement, monitor, evaluate and amend action plans 5. Begin cycle again Action planning is powerful because it is straight forward and connects each of the components into a plan that leads from a learning result statement to evaluating the plan for the improvement in the intended learning. It identifies clearly each part of the process and how they must all connect together. 7. The Action Planning Template Result statements prioritize the focus of the action plan. They are between 2-4 sentences long and identify an area that students need to improve upon. These statements are based upon results from self-study and a variety of data sources including SALT reports, state assessment data, local assessments as well as other school and district data. 8. The Action Planning Template These are the learning behaviors students must do more of in order to reach the result statement. What will you actually see them doing in their classes during the course of the year. These are the learning behaviors students must do more of in order to reach the result statement. 9. The Action Planning Template Students will not change on their own and teachers control what happens in the classes, so this column identifies those things that teachers must do differently to reach different results. These practices should be related directly to the identified student learning behaviors. This column helps to bring everyone on board and make it everyone’s business to change. 10. The Action Planning Template Monitoring, unlike evaluation, cannot wait until the end of the year. Need to determine how well the plan is working during the course of the year. Encourages adjustments to make changes during the year so don’t waste a year of student learning. Important to develop a calendar to ensure that monitoring takes place and is communicated to the school. Monitoring, unlike evaluation, cannot wait until the end of the year. 11. The Action Planning Template Collaboration is needed to build ownership of the plan and to help teachers develop their capacity with their peers. Teachers need time to meet and to discuss student progress, needed changes, and how they will accomplish these changes together. 13. The Action Planning Template At the end of the year, important to ask if the plan reached its intended result, improved student learning in a specific area. Need to have ways to be able to answer this questions (how will you evaluate it) and communicate the results to the entire school community.
