West African Empires • Ghana, Mali , and Songhai were the most important empires located in West Africa.
GHANA EMPIRE=Wealthy Empire • “Crossroads of Trade” –All gold and salt trade passed through Ghana. • Ghana traded their gold for salt. • Military rulers collected taxes on traders coming in and out of Ghana. • Iron Weapons helped Ghana keep control.
Mali Empire • Ruler Mansa Musa, a devout Muslim, went on the Hajj to Mecca. • He took 12,000 soldiers and 24,000 pounds of gold with him. • Returned with teachers, architects, etc. to increase influence and spread of Islam. • Controlled gold mines and rebuilt salt and gold trade.
Songhai Empire • Mined salt and traded salt for gold. • Gained control of West Africa trade and mastered trade by river.
Government • West African empires had central governments ruled by kings. • Empire- divided into provinces. Provinces were controlled by local rulers called chiefs. • Bureaucratic governments-Leaders assigned to oversee society…fishing, forests, farming money etc… • Social Order-King, Gov’t Worker, Artisans, Farmers, peasants, slaves.
Religion • Believed in one God-Monotheistic • Queen of Sheba met with King Solomon • Introduced Solomon’s religion (Judaism) to her empire east African empire. • Overtime Islam and Christianity began to become a part of Africa’s culture. • See map on page 463.
Language • There are thousands of African languages.
Muslim/Islam Influences *Swahili language of Northeastern Africa is a blend of Muslim and African Influences. *Islam influences today include Islamic Religion in the Northeast, art and architecture.
Slavery • Africans enslaved criminals and enemies of war. • Slaves could regain their freedom by hard work or marrying a free person. • The Portuguese introduced Europeans to slave trade.
Culture Music, dance and storytelling has always been an ongoing part of the African culture.
