  1. Welcome Year 6 SAT Information Evening

  2. What are SATs? Why do we have them? Standardised Assessment Tests give the: • Teachers • Mangotsfield Primary • Secondary Schools • Government • You and your child an idea of the level at which they have achieved by the end of KS2. Children cannot fail them.

  3. What do the results of the tests mean? • Schools, including Mangotsfield, are set targets that they have to meet and the results will show whether they have achieved them or not. • Most importantly, they are a tool to help us know where your child is ‘at’ and then we, together with their secondary school, can decide on their ‘next steps’.

  4. Expected Levels • Average - Level 4 • Less able – Level 3 • More able - Level 5 or 6 N = no test level awarded M = missing script

  5. Date of SATs • Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May 2014 Level 6 Papers (taken by children who may be working at this level) in Maths and English will be taken during the afternoon sessions.

  7. Mathematics • Paper 1 – no calculator • Paper 2 – no calculator *change from previous year • Mental Maths Test

  8. The Results • Levels will published be in July (if you do not want us to share results with your child first, please let us know). • Teacher Assessment will be reported alongside SATs results.

  9. Maths SAT – how can you help? • Mental test questions • Practise Times Tables • Using money • Using timetables and calendars • Working out time problems e.g. length of TV programmes • Measure - weighing of objects • Reading scales • Looking at graphs and charts • Using revision guides • BBC Revisewise.   10. Reading SAT – how can you help? Read regularly (at least five 10 minute sessions per week). Encourage children to read and discuss a range of texts e.g stories, information books, newspaper, leaflets, recipes etc. Ask children questions about their reading and reading preferences. See resources on the school website.

  11. Writing assessment – how can you help? • Main focus is on CONTENT rather than presentation or spelling. • However spelling is still important and is assessed in the spelling, punctuation and grammar test. Our school spelling scheme supports this. • Practise writing at home for a range of purposes. • Re-reading and ‘up-levelling’ crucial skills to develop. • See resources on the school website.

Preparation – at home • Reassure them that as long as they do their best that is all that matters! • Emphasise that SATs are simply a way of them showing what they know – they cannot fail! • Make sure they have a quiet, organised place to revise and study. • Ensure that they always have a good breakfast and have a snack in school. • Have a bottle of water in school to keep hydrated. • Plenty of sleep! • Encourage them to ask a teacher or tell an adult if they are unsure of anything! No pressure!

Preparation – in school • In school – at the end of Term 4 and at the beginning of Term 5 some of our literacy and maths lessons will have a ‘revision’ focus to consolidate and extend previous learning with a particular emphasis on applying this knowledge to ‘test’ style questions. We will continue to learn new skills to challenge and extend pupils. • Home Learning – during this period home learning tasks will have a literacy and maths focus and be linked to the work we have completed in class. Home learning will be given out weekly (no Topic project). • We will also be working through previous SAT papers to ensure pupils are familiar with the layout and are able to access the tests. These may be sent home so children can re-work through any areas of concern/difficulty.
