Parody and ya-o-i • ya-o-i: yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi or no build-up, no foreclosure, and no meaning. • Mainly found in Doujinshi or amateur manga. • Makes up a large percentage of manga found at Comiket.
Gintama • Originally a manga started in 2003 by Hideaki Sorachi. • Manga was serialized in Shonen Jump • Anime shown on TV Tokyo • Plot: Instead of Americans, aliens called Amanto open the ports of Japan at the end of the Edo period. Gintoki is a samurai who fought in the war against the Amanto but now does odd jobs with the otaku Shinpachi, the insanely strong Kagura and her giant dog Sadaharu. • Gintama parodies both historical events, folktales, and modern pop-culture. • Historical Parodies: The Bakufu - Tokugawa government. The Shinsengumi - the special police force of the late Tokugawa Shogunate. Kondou Isami. Hijikata Toshizou, and Okita Souji. There is a series that takes place at Ryugu Palace. • Constantly pokes fun at Shonen Jump and the editor/writer relationship. Also talks about Otaku.
