Objectives • Understand the following literary terms: • Fiction • Plot • Exposition • Rising action • Climax • Falling action • Resolution • Setting • Theme • Main and minor characters • Dynamic and static characters • Analyze the development of plot in a narrative text • Identify basic conflicts • Recognize theme within a text

  5. What Makes a Great Book Great?

  6. Crisis and conflict are a part of life – the challenge is not to avoid them, but to deal with them. ----The Language of Literature, page 22 What are some of the crises and conflicts experienced in Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie?

  7. Fiction • Works of prose that have imaginary elements • Can be inspired by real events but usually comes from writer’s imagination • Entertaining; Can provide a deeper understanding of life • Two major types • Novels • Short Stories • Contain fourfive basic elements

  8. Characters Characters are the people, animals, or imaginary creatures who take part in the action. Main Characters: most story events center on one or more of these. Minor Characters: the other characters that interact with the main characters and help move the story along. Dynamic Characters: change as a result of events. Static Characters: remain unchanged throughout the story.

  9. Setting The setting of a story is the particular time and place which the events occur. • May be a real or an imaginary place. • May occur in the past, the present, or the future.

  10. Theme In a work of fiction, the theme is a perception about life or human nature that the writer conveys to the reader. • Usually not directly stated. • Can be revealed by: • A work’s title • Key phrases and statements about big ideas • The ways the characters change and the lesson they learn about life
