What do you know about the “Pilgrims?” • In August 1620, after stuffing over 100 Pilgrims and their cargo on board, the Mayflower set off alone across the imposing Atlantic Ocean to begin its famous voyage. • These people called each other “Pilgrims” because of the religious journey they were taking. • There were other travelers on board the Mayflower called “Strangers” by the Separatists. • The Pilgrim’s reached their destination of Plymouth, Massachusetts in November of 1620. • The Pilgrim’s celebrated their arrival with the first Thanksgiving dinner. • The Pilgrim’s were being persecuted by King James I for wanting to separate from the Church of England. • The Pilgrim’s were leaving England for what they thought would be a better life in Virginia. • Samoset and Squanto will always be remembered for surprising the Pilgrim’s with their grasp of the English language and for walking, suddenly, into their camp one day asking if there was a way they could help out.
