The NATIONAL CURRICULUM STATEMENT (NCS) is currently being implemented in South Africa starting with grade 10 in 2006, grade 11 in 2007 and grade 12 which will be implemented in 2008. The qualification that will arise from the assessment of the NCS is the National Senior Certificate (NSC).
WCED programme • Schools informed in 2006 of Grade 12 national exam in 2007. • Grade 12 exemplar question papers and memos provided to all schools • Feedback from schools generally positive. • Challenges included History and Second Additional Language - new History papers & inclusion of SAL
Grade 11 examination • Write all subjects currently examined using national papers in grade 12 as per WCED timetable. • Grade 11 timetable (circulars 0025 and 0042/2007) • Schools to set all remaining papers. • Exam guidelines – Accounts / Life Science / History (circulars 0039 & 0041/2007)
Conducting the exams • Question papers sent in consignments – to be opened by Circuit Manager and packed as per Grade 12 requirements. Examination minute 0042/2007 • Open papers only on day of exam as per grade 12 requirements. (5 – 26 November) • Schools invigilate on their own. • Monitoring will include the grade 11 exam.
Marking Grade 11 • Memoranda – sent to schools as soon as received from DOE. (use e-mail for faster distribution) • HODs / subject leaders to hold memorandum discussions • Marking must be done following the national memoranda. • Internal moderation must be done at school level. • Mark sheets must be completed and schedules developed.
Post exam administration • 9 scripts from Languages / Maths / Maths Lit. will be selected and sent to HO. Provincial and national moderation for these subjects. • Curriculum Minute in October for details. • Schools must do their resulting internally and schedules approved by Circuit Managers. See circ. 0031/2007 for new promotion requirements. • Reports to parents managed by schools.
