ASSISTANTS • Certified Nursing Assistant • Provides basic bedside care • CNA’s • Medical Assistant • Works in Dr’s office, clinics, ambulatory care. • Assist with exams & treatments • Routine labs , EKG’s, draw blood, injections • Administrative duties Other Assistants:
NURSES (RN) • Education: 2 (ADN),3 (DipN),4 years(BSN) • +2 years = nurse practitioner • Licensed = NCLEX Exam • Provide numerous aspects of patient care • Primary Care – provide all aspects of an individual patient’s care • Team Nursing - RN supervises a team of nurses & assistants
NURSES (RN) • Responsibilities • Administering medications • Preparing patients for diagnostic procedures • Admitting & discharging patients from unit • Inform doctors of patient’s progress & test results • Notify doctors whenever the patient experiences a change in condition
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) • Education 1 year diploma • License state exam = LPN • Works under the direction of RN • Performs technical nursing duties • Administer meds • Provides wound care • Starts IV’s
Health Unit Coordinators • AKA ward clerk, unit secretary • Clerical and reception duties • Coordinates activities
