  4. Context: State Budget • $650M in cuts for 2011-12 • Goal in the face of cuts is to maintain: • Quality • Access • Affordability The UC experience continues to be a good value for students and their families.

  5. Tuition and Fee Increases • Systemwide Tuition and Fees increasing in response to state budget cuts • UC remains committed to financial aid programs • 2012-13 application fee increased by $10

  6. Non-resident Enrollment • Non-resident enrollment increasing • Non-resident students fill unused capacity • No more than 10% systemwide for all enrolled undergraduates • Non-resident students are not displacing CA residents

  8. Fall 2011 at a Glance: Freshmen • CA resident applications grew 3.6% • 61,345 CA residents were offered admission • Number of CA residents who accepted this offer is nearly identical to last year – 35,064

  9. 2011 Freshmen Academic Profile • Newly enrolling students are well-prepared • 24.1 year-long college prep courses on average • Average GPA: 3.86 • Average SAT: 1782 • Average ACT: 26 • Remember: UC campuses admit students with a broad range of academic achievements

  10. Diversity of Freshmen • Diversity Measures • More than 30% are from underrepresented groups • More than 45% are first generation • More than 40% are low-income NOTE: Preliminary CA-Resident Enrollees

  11. Fall 2011 at a Glance: Transfers • Applications from CA community college (CCC) students grew by 9.6% • 19,156 CCC students were offered admission • Number of CA residents who accepted this offer is nearly identical to last year – 17,754

Excellence and Inclusivity “Mindful of its mission as a public institution, the University of California … seeks to enroll, on each of its campuses, a student body that, beyond meeting the University’s eligibility requirements, demonstrates high academic achievement or exceptional personal talent, and that encompasses the broad diversity of cultural, racial, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds characteristic of California.” – UC Policy on Undergraduate Admissions

  14. Admission Requirements All applicants who meet minimum requirements will receive a comprehensive review of their application. • 11 of the 15 “a-g” courses by the end of 11th grade • 3.0 minimum GPA (weighted, capped) • ACT with Writing or the SAT Reasoning Test

  15. Campus Selection in Admission Comprehensive Review – Policy since 2002: • Defines merit using multiple measures of accomplishment and promise • Considers the personal and school context in which the applicant has demonstrated achievement • Requires individual applicant review

Systemwide Referral Process • UC intends to continue to use the referral process to provide a space to students who are not admitted to any campus of their choice and who meet the following: • Are California residents • Meet UC’s admission index (top 9% statewide) and/or • Are in the top 9% of their class at the end of junior year after completing 11 specific “a-g” courses – the ELC process

  17. ELC Process • Outreach letters will be sent to top students from each participating high school in September encouraging them to apply • ELC will expand from the top 4% to the top 9% • Students will know their ELC status after applying for admission

  18. Key Messages for Students • Aspire to be a well-rounded student • Do as well as possible in “a-g” courses • Complete the required tests • Apply to multiple campuses • SAT Subject Tests are no longer required
