Gandhi • Gandhi preaches civil disobedience • Non-violence • Boycotts • Strikes • The Salt March • Indians required to buy salt from gvt. • Gandhi & followers walk 240 miles to sea to make their own salt • Police attack a peaceful demonstration on salt factory • Salt factory protest video - "Gandhi"

  4. Turkey • Mustafa Kemal leads Turkey in victory over Greeks – becomes president • Reforms: • Separates laws of Islam from laws of gvt. • Abolishes religious courts • Women’s suffrage and can hold public office • Industrializes Turkey and increases economy

Saudi Arabia • Abd al-Aziz Ibn Saud unifies Arabia and names country Saudi Arabia after family • Keeps strict religious law & traditions • Modernization limited to certain areas • Oil discovered in Middle East – 2/3 of world’s oil in Middle East • Western countries invest and try to control oil rich countries
