Early Days • Born in a wealthy family • Literate in Greek • Father elected consul; Pompey helped with his campaigns • Father was connected with Marius; supported him in civil war
Rise to Power • Pompey allies with Sulla, helps him take back Rome • Senate sends Pompey to recover Africa from Marians; returns successful • Intimidated Senate to give him position in Spain; becomes proconsul to Spain • Leads a war in Spain against Sertorius • Defeats the last surviving rebels in the Gladiatorial Wars on return to Rome
Pompey and Crassus • Pompey got all the credit for the Gladiatorial Wars, even though Crassus did all the work • Both return to Rome and are elected consuls in 70 BC • Overthrew Sullan constitution during consulship
The War with the Pirates and the Conquests of the East • In 76 BC, Pompey was sent to deal with pirates in the Mediterranean Sea • Cleared out the pirates in ninety days of his setting out • Stayed in the east and conquered Jerusalem, leaving Judea as an independent state, Syria, and Cilicia • Pompey returned to Rome in hopes of recognition from the Senate; disbanded army as a sign of goodwill; Senate refused to recognize his conquests
The First Triumvirate • Formed coalition with Caesar, let Crassus join because of his wealth • The purpose was to get recognition for Pompey, to oppose the Senate, to get a consulship and command over Gaul for Caesar, and for Crassus and Pompey to also obtain consulship and command over provinces
Civil War • The greed of the Triumvirate and the death of Julia led to a separation; married another woman, refused to marry into Caesar's family • While Pompey was a consul, Caesar began attacking Rome • Caesar and Pompey battle in Greece; Pompey fled to Egypt and was murdered
Last Thoughts • Pompey was an extremely popular military leader • He had the greatest military record for his time in Roman history • He was driven by personal ambition • Was known as a particularly brutal combatant and would spare no one to win
