  5. Portuguese Voyages • Portugal wants to expand their Atlantic fishing industry • Henry the Navigator- promotes the study of navigation and explores down the coast of West Africa

  6. Portuguese Voyages • Portuguese raids in Northwest Africa and the Canary Islands will initiate the slave trade. • However, the gold trade will become more important to the Portuguese. • A growing number of commercial industries will become involved.

  7. Portuguese Voyages • Ferneo Gomes- Explores the Gold Coast and establishes sugar plantations • Portugal will establish sugar plantations in Brazil and the Caribbean

  8. Portuguese Voyages • Bartolomeu Dias- first explorer to sail around the tip of Africa • Vasco Da Gama- first to sail around Africa and reach India

  9. Spanish Voyages • Because of internal issues, the Spanish will explore much later. • The marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella will lead to peace and prosperity in Spain.

  10. Spanish Voyages • The voyages of Columbus – nuff said • Old world and New World linked

  11. Treaty of Tordesilles • Spain and Portugal split the world up

  12. Spanish Voyages • Magellan- First to sail around the globe • Will establish Spanish colonization in the Philippines

  13. And the impact • Columbus's voyages will set a precedent and other Europeans will follow. • Empires will build and new trade networks will develop.
