Policies to Encourage Being Active at Work • Policy to allow “Walking Meetings”. • Flexible work schedule for physical activity. • 30 minutes of activity “on the clock” (NC Prevention Partners) • Guaranteed Ride Home Program for employees that use alternative transportation • Active volunteerism (Habitat House, Big Sweep) • Charity Walk/Run

  10. Provide incentives to change behavior. Money is the most effective incentive. Cash and Visa/MasterCard Gift Cards are most popular because they can use it where they need it. Think outside the pocketbook: • Donations from local businesses • Jeans Day • Leave early on a Friday • Trophy, including bragging rights • Recognition and Certificate at company meeting • Featured on the Wellness Board

  12. Success Story: MCHD and others Onsite Farmers Market Many companies have invited local farmers to sell their produce to employees

  13. Success Story: Amdocs, Inc. Fruit and Veggies for Free during the workday.

  14. Success Story: Mueller Diecut Healthier Vending Machine This small manufacturing company requested healthier options in vending machines and worked with vending company to raise prices on unhealthy options and lower prices on healthy options.

  15. Success Story: R.E. Mason Co. Healthy Snack Program They implemented a policy to allow only healthy snacks to be sold to employees.

  16. Success Story: Tesa Tape Afternoon Stretching Program This small business stops for 5 minutes every afternoon to take a stretch break. Employees report feeling more relaxed and focused after stretching.

  17. Success Story: MCHD Walking Meeting The Mecklenburg County Health Department allows employees to hold a “walking meeting”.

  18. Success Story: American Red Cross Fitness Corner This small laboratory testing facility provided free weights and mats in a corner of a small office.

  19. Success Story: MCHD Created a beautiful outdoor space. Employees now use the space as a destination on a walk, a place to read through paperwork or to eat lunch.

  20. Success Story: Barnhardt Mfg. Wellness Board of the Month Posted a Wellness Board.

  21. Success Story: Little Architecture Wellness Newsletter Art department at this progressive architectural firm created their own wellness newsletter.

  22. Success Story: CMS Education Center Employees rarely used stairs to get around in this four story building, even though the elevator was notoriously slow. They posted “Take the Stairs” signs at the elevators and saw a increased use of stairwells.

  24. Success Story: Johnson and Wales University Employees participated in a walking challenge using Fit City Tracking Tool. Created teams and gave away pedometers and Fit City T-Shirts. Very well received and had great participation! Gave away a prize to the individual with the most points and the top team.

  26. Join the Fit City Challenge! Offer incentives for employee participation in the Fit City Challenge to help encourage healthy lifestyles. Encourage employees to exercise the equivalent of 5 miles per week and eat at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables each day.
