  5. Active Membership • 3 Meetings and 3 hours of community service per semester • Please do not wait until the last minute to fulfill your community service hours! • Attending more meetings and events are HIGHLY encouraged!

Bake Sale for American Cancer Society Date: Thursday, Feb 26 and Friday, Feb 27 Time: 10a – 3p both days Location: Outside Stamp Student Union, by the ATM # Hours:1 hour for bringing a baked good, 1 hour max 1 hour per shift *If bringing a baked good: 1. Please put individual cookies, brownies, etc in separate Ziploc bags 2. Drop off baked goods at 9:45a on Thursday, Feb 26 Next Step: Fill out the sign-up sheet! Questions?   8. 2. Children’s Hospital Date: March 25, 2009 Time: 4pm-6pm Location: Children’s National Medical Center 111 Michigan Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20010 # Hours:Maximum of 2 hours. You must arrive at the hospital on time in order to be considered for 2 hours of community service. Event:. Children’s Hospital provides several events for the children staying at the hospital. This event requires us to participate in a fun activity with the children. Activities range from painting, drawing, or even making picture frames. Just something fun to keep the kids smiling. Transportation/Meeting Time: College Park Metro Station – Brookland Station. We will meet at 3:20 so that we provide ourselves with enough time to arrive. Relay for Life Date: Saturday, May 2 – May 3 Time: 7:00p – 7:00a Location: Ludwig Field, University of Maryland # Hours:undetermined Event: Fundraise for the American Cancer Society by Joining our Pre-Pharmacy Society Team ($10 Registration Fee) *Raising money for the team is preferred, but not required Next Step: 1. Medication Therapy Management • What is Medication Therapy Management (MTM)? • “The partnership of the pharmacist, the patient or their caregiver, and other health professionals that promotes the safe and effective use of medications and helps patients achieve the targeted outcomes from medication therapy” Source: http://www.pharmacist.com

  15. 10 Strategies to Reduce Medication Errors • According to the United States Pharmacopeia (USP): • 200,000 medication errors were documented (2002) • More than 3000 of these errors resulted in patient injury • 514 required initial or prolonged hospitalization • 47 required intervention to sustain life • 20 resulted in a patient’s death!

  17. Case 1 Mr. Jones, a long-time patient at Smiling Face Pharmacy, presents to the pharmacy counter asking for a refill on his furosemide prescription. The pharmacist notices in the computer that Mr. Jones received a 30-day supply of this medication 2 weeks earlier. When the pharmacist comments on this, Mr. Jones insists that he took his last tablet this morning. Mr. Jones then adds that he always takes this medication 3 times a day, because he knows how important it is to control his arthritis pain.

  18. Case 1 • Furosemide: • Diuretic…increases the amount of urine, allowing for the body to get rid of excess water • Use to treat: • High blood pressure • Preventing strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems • Reduces edema • Can also be used to decrease excess calcium in the blood

  21. Case 2 As soon as the pharmacy opens in the morning, a woman approaches the pharmacy counter with a box of Alka-seltzer PM and Claritin. She comments that she is going to race home to take these medications. She also comments that she always uses Claritin for her allergies, because she cannot afford to fall asleep at work. She uses Alka-seltzer for her heartburn.
