How Do You Feel Today? • I’m a little scared and I’m delighted that I feel that way. International Centre for Consulting Excellence
Today’s World • “Hell is a city much like London” • The so-called “global village” is much like London – in 1754 • There is a chasm between rich and poor • To win the future we must bridge that chasm International Centre for Consulting Excellence
In 1750’s London • 33.6% of children died before their first birthday • 9% of survivors died in infancy - before they were 4 years old • 49.7% did not live to reach the age of 20 • The situation is similar in too many parts of the world today International Centre for Consulting Excellence
In 1750’s London • The few rich were very rich indeed • The vast majority lived in abject poverty • Today 0.97 billion people living in the “rich” countries own 57% of the world’s wealth • 5 billion live in the “poor” countries – a few very rich indeed…the majority…? International Centre for Consulting Excellence

A Rich And Wonderful World • World GNP has more than quadrupled in 40 years • From $8 trillion (1960) to $40 trillion (2000) International Centre for Consulting Excellence
Aid Or Trade? • Aid has been relatively level at 0.18% of the donor countries wealth • Current aid programmes total $50 billion – or tens bucks per head to the world’s poor • 1% increase in fair trade from the poorer countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America could lift 128 million out of poverty International Centre for Consulting Excellence
Loans • 29 Countries owe more than their GDP • 89% of the income from Congo’s exports goes to debt repayments • The problem is not limited to Africa, 72% of Brazil’s total exports go the same way • As Turkey applies to join the EU almost half of their export revenues go to service their debts International Centre for Consulting Excellence
Fair Trade • A cow in the EU can attract $2 a day in subsidies • Meanwhile 800 million subsist on less than one dollar a day International Centre for Consulting Excellence
