Tuesday, 9/16/14 • Bellringer: Discuss examples of Irony in Act I such as Mercy Lewis. The description in the stage directions of Mercy as “sly, fat, and merciless” signals that she comes to pry rather than to offer sympathy. Note that she reveals to Abigail when the two are alone that she gave Ruth a good beating to try to wake her up. Miller makes effective ironic use of her Christian name, “Mercy”. What is ironic about Betty’s “flying to Mama” when she wakes up? • “Understanding Irony” • Read the song • What type of irony is present? • List a few examples of the irony you identified in your composition notebook.
