  1. Welcome to Curriculum Night!August 21, 2012

  2. How Will Common Core Impact MyChild’s Learning? • Common link between grade levels • Performance-based • Fewer standards so students are learning at deeper levels • Less multiple choice and more application/evaluation of concepts

  3. Report Cards • Grades come from the assessments. These assessments will come home in the Friday folder. • The report card has been revised to reflect the Common Core • Grading scale is 1 to 4 • You will see patterns of growth with each quarter

  4. Work Habits Report • The conduct report is set up like the report card. I will indicate areas needing improvement each week. • Students will receive the following: S =Satisfactory P=Progressing N=Needs Improvement A sticker in the comments box =Good week!  New report card standards (This will be reflected on Conduct Report beginning 2nd Quarter.) E for Exemplary (little to no reminders) S for Successful (Several reminders with student striving to improve throughout week) D for Does Not Meet (Frequent reminders with little evidence of improvement) I appreciate your support in helping your child grow into an independent, responsible learner.

  5. Communication • Email works best! Does everyone receive my emails? • Non-emergency calls need to be before 8:00 and after 2:30. • Notes • Friday Folder • Newsletter • Conferences are coming in October!

  6. What Does Reading Look Like in Third Grade? • Whole group instruction through Shared Reading (Because of Winn-Dixie) • Differentiated instruction through Guided Reading • D.E.A.R.(independent reading);Accelerated Reading • Students are expected to read 20 minutes each night.

WhatDoes Math Look Like in Third Grade? • Fewer standards with deeper understanding (see green rubric) • Math Journaling: Students will be constructing written responses explaining their strategies and mathematical understanding of the concept • The students also have different performance tasks to help with higher order thinking “If you don’t know why, you don’t know the answer.”

  8. WhatDoesWriting Look Like in Third Grade? • Students will write on a variety of topics throughout the year. Our Writers Workshop will take students through the writing process with emphasis on: • Persuasive (Opinion) • Narrative • Informational (Research) • Response to Literature • There will be more writing in every subject area.

  9. Science • Earth Science: Rocks and Minerals; Soils; Fossils • Physical Science: Heat Energy; Magnets • Life Science: Georgia Habitats; Adaptations of Living Things; Preserving Ecosystems * Science will be more challenging than in past years. Students will be expected to demonstrate/apply what they have learned. * Study guides will be given for each unit. Third graders will take the science portion of the CRCT.

  10. Social Studies • Map Skills • 9 Famous Americans (3 per quarter) • Roots of Democracy/Influences of Greece • Branches of Government • Economics *Study guides will be sent home to prepare for assessments.

  11. WhatHomeworkisGivenin Third Grade? • Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Weekly reading assignment and Math Drops In The Bucket (DITB) due on Friday. • All students will write their assignments into their agendas each morning. • Please check your child’s agenda each night. • 20 minutes of reading is required each night.

  12. Odds and Ends • Friday Folders (Please sign and return on Monday.) • Parties (winter and last day)We have volunteers for each. You will hear from a room mom closer to the time. • Birthdays-Celebrated with a snack once a month on either the half day or a designated Friday. • Field trips-Form coming soon for Gold Mine • Ice cream-Twice a week! Send $ on Monday or Thursday. • Lunchroom-You are welcome to sit with your child on the stage or outside in the moat. 12:06-12:36
