Using student feedback to develop resources for time management in Higher Education Kim Shahabudin, Judy Turner, Angela Taylor (University of Reading) “You don’t realise that you need to know how to manage your time until you realise that you can’t manage it!” – Undergraduate student, University of Reading. Managing time effectively is central to independent learning. Success in all other study practices depends on efficient time use for increasingly complex academic demands. Responsible for the learning area of Time Management within the LearnHigher CETL, we are seeking to produce best practice resources that respond to student needs. This project used existing resources to initiate a continuing process of evaluation and development. • Original resources • Detailed Study Guide (A4 booklet) • Workshop • Evaluation processes • Focus groups • Online survey • Feedback sheets • Main points from evaluations • Too lengthy • Too prescriptive • Need easier access • Too many bullet points • New resources • 1.Top tips leaflet • compact paper format • brief explanatory paragraphs • direct distribution in lectures • online version for easy access • 2.Interactive workshop • -reflective exercises to assess own needs & learning practices • online version for easy access • Evaluation processes • Online survey • Individual interviews • Feedback sheets • Main points from evaluations • Paper and oral presentation preferred over online format • More wanted on time wasting • Advice for specific student groups • Future developments • More embedded delivery of study advice • Paper & online resources on procrastination & motivation • Targeted resources e.g. for mature students, freshers, research postgrads
