IB ART FINAL By: Rachel Daniliuc
Candidate Statement Rough Draft My first attempt at trying my hand at art came in my sophomore year in Mrs. Char’s MYP art class where I was enjoyed being restricted to completing project after project for each unit we covered. In class, the extent of my artistic explorations was again limited to the doodles in corner of my assignments and journals, until I began familiarizing myself with media other than the usual color pencils and ball point pens. Upon entering IB Art, I became more acquainted with the unfamiliar, choosing to explore more with various paints and pigments as I adopted the color preferences of other artists in my own work. At first, I was grateful to have summer experiences from which to give me a head start on the theme I was certain I wanted to work with, however I was quick to learn that connecting both research, art pieces, and personal connections were not as simple as I had thought them to be. I find myself altering pieces several times even after I declare them to be finished, so I could incorporate yet another style or technique I had learned about. As time went on, fondness for acrylic painting and splattering grew and improved, as I began experimenting a lot with other media like watercolors and oil paints which I previously did not prefer. I tried not to pay too much attention to my small details and mistakes, but to boldly try new things instead. I am inspired by an array of various colors and their combinations and have enjoyed testing a wide array of combinations along the way. My artistic process begins with an image or technique I feel would allow me to try my hand at freely, rather than meticulous designs that require me to be fully engaged in my process. Pieces are initially started with vague ideas or messages that I am interested in and would like to share with my audience. In my free time I enjoy flipping through fashion magazines and making collages of my favorite styles from that season. Many of my ideas stem from ANTM photo shoots, current designers and runways like Marchesa and Dior. Artists I have researched include: Paul Poiret, Francis Picabia, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. Despite my many and varied works, I have yet to discover what my favorite art style is since I am constantly encountering other extensions to connect to my theme of fashion. Word Count: 405
