  3. What is the name of our textbook? • Mathematics 9: Focus on Understanding • It’s heavy!! • Try to leave the book in class as much as possible. • Each person will be assigned a book in the near future.

  4. What will we be doing in Math? • Chapter 1: Number Sense • Chapter 2: Patterns and Relations • Chapter 3: Equations and Inequalities • Chapter 4: Probability • Chapter 5: Measurement • Chapter 6: Geometric Transformations • Chapter 7: Polynomials • Chapter 8: Data Management • Chapter 9: Geometry

  7. How do I teach my lessons? • Through power point booklets. • Through warm up problems and examples. • By discussion. • By doing mental math daily. • By problem solving questions. • By doing problems in class individually. • By evaluating.

  8. What do you need to bring every class? • Mandatory supplies: • Appropriate chapter booklet • Paper • Pen, pencil and erasers • A scientific calculator • A willingness to learn (corny to mention but important to clarify)

  9. Suggestion #1 • Math is not like Social Studies. In Social Studies, you may study for a test and never see that certain area of content ever again. In Math, previous skills are used all the time.

  10. Suggestion #2 • To make Math easier to understand, practice frequently used Math skills like multiplication facts and the order of operations on a regular basis. • This practice will allow other more complicated concepts to be more effectively understood.

  11. Classroom expectations • I try to follow the rules outlined by the student agenda (******) • In my room: • Food or sticky beverages are not permitted during class time. • Be respectful to myself and your classmates (******) • Act professionally during class time (******)

  12. How do I get a final mark? • Each school year at SMJH follows the same evaluation policy: • Term 1: 30% (Sept 3-Nov 13) • Term 2: 15% (Nov 16-Feb 19) • January exam: 15% • Term 3: 25% (Feb 19-June 29) • June exam: 15%

  13. How is each term mark evaluated? • Term evaluation rubric: • Tests: 80% • Class Assignments: 15% • Problem solving: 5% • Sample term mark calculation: see board

  14. Late work policy • The late work policy is explained in the Student Agenda. • In a nutshell, every day an assignment is late, you lose 10%. Any assignment that is 5 days or more late will not be accepted.

  15. Homework and other fun stuff • I will try my very best to keep homework to a minimal. • However, to make the best possible marks in this class, I suggest regular home study throughout the year. • So, even though you don’t have something for homework directly, does not mean that you should not study regularly.

  16. Homework website • This is a very important website to save on your home computer and to show to your parents • I post all things that I do in class on this site. So, there are no excuses for not having things done on time now! • The SMJH homework website is www.cbv.ns.ca/sydmines/

  17. Tests • Typically, students will be given at least one school week (5 school days) notice before a test and/or major evaluation. • If you miss a test, please have your parents call the school to explain your absence. • As well, if you miss a test, you will be required to write the test after school on the day that you return.

  18. Extra help policy • Extra help is offered to all my students from Monday to Thursday during the hour of 3 pm to 3:30 pm, in either Room 107 or Room 202 (Detention Room) • Extra help is not offered during lunch period or recess due to time restraints. • No appointment for help is necessary but it is suggested.

  19. In conclusion • I hope that we have a great year together. • I hope that I can make Mathematics a bit less intimidating and manageable for you.

  20. So, let’s begin… • I would like to start this year with 3 simple questions: • On a scale from 1 to 10, what would you rate your math ability? • Where do you use Math? • What professions require a competent knowledge of Math?
