Block Scheduling Schedule Change Any changes in a school are difficult but the implementations of schedule changes are not easily transitional. A regular schedule can leave many students lost in the shuffle, but with a block scheduling class time is longer and classes per day are less. Block scheduling allows teachers to enhance teaching methods and students to learn more.

No Child Left Behind Every year schools attempt to adhere to the mandates of the NCLB Act. More time spent in class results in more time a student has on task to meet sufficiently the proficiency requirements. Block scheduling allows such outcome. Block scheduling allows schools to meet annual yearly progress (AYP) yet align with state and federal mandates.

Implementation and Transition(Principal and Assistant Principal) • Periodic Evaluations • Teacher Effectiveness • Student Achievement • Performance • Transition: • Ongoing evaluations and state tests will determine effectiveness of block scheduling. Decisions and determination of changes or adjustments to scheduling is upon evaluations.
Implementation and Transition(Teachers) Staff Development • Preparation • Teacher Planning • Differentiated Instruction • Transition: • Block scheduling effectiveness is evident in the transition phase that consist of ongoing collaboration of teachers and feedback throughout the year to ensure needs of teachers are met.
Implementation and Transition(Students) Improvements • Higher Order Thinking • Student Centered Learning • Improved Citizenship • Transition: • As student’s transition to four by four block scheduling, students takes four classes’ daily, improvements are evident in the increase in student achievement and less disciplinary action.
Conclusion A schedule change in any school can be difficult if the right plan of action is not in place. Changing from a traditional schedule to one of block scheduling can result in a positive outcome. Achievements in state testing, students meeting proficiency, professional development assisting teachers to meet the need of every student, and lower disciplinary actions. Block scheduling allows administration, teachers, and students to win.
