About Primozone • Founded in 2000, Sweden • Industrial owner Westfal-Larsen Technology, Norway • First ozone installation in 2006 - now in 25+ countries on 5 continents • Experienced ozone provider – designs complete ozone solutions • R&D and production in-house • ISO 9001 & 14001 certified
Application of Ozone in Full-Scale to Reduce Filamentous Bulking Sludge at Öresundsverket WWTP Filip NilssonA,B,Marinette HagmanC,Artur Tomasz MielczarekD Per Halkjær NielsenD & Karin JönssonA A: Lund University, Water & Environmental Technology B: Primozone Production AB C: NSVA D: Aalborg University, Biotechnology
Introduction • Bulking sludge is very common at WWTPs using activated sludge. • Usual culprits in municipal WWTPs: Microthrix parvicella, Curvibacterand phyla TM7. • Can cause: • Reduced settling • Decreased capacity • Reduced solids retention • Increased costs
Introduction • Possible to remedy with: • Changing process parameters • Non-specific methods such as Ozone or PAX • However, care must be taken to safeguard the biological processes with either approach
Öresundsverket WWTP • Commissioned in 1974, Helsingborg, Sweden • Not uncommon with DSVI > 200 ml/g • Designed for 220 000 PE (150 000 PE in 2012) • Flow 70 000 m3/day or 1.85 MGD • Largest Bio-P (EBPR) plant in Sweden

Aim • Reduce the DSVI down to manageable levels with ozone in full-scale • Gain information on the bacterial population subjected to ozone treatment • Observe the Bio-P and nitrification processes during ozonation
Sampling • Operating parameters: • DSVI • VSS • Nitrification rate • Biological phosphorus release rate • Samples for Q-FISH and light microscopy • Additional samples: • NH4-N • NO3-N • Total N • Total P
Key Figures • In operation for 45 days • Ozone production 900 g O3 / hr • Ozone concentration 200 g O3/Nm3(13% wt) • Ozone dose 2.8-5.0 g O3/kg SS • 42 m3 return sludge / hr, ~5% (185 GPM) • ~11 minutes HRT @ 1.1-1.2 bar • 8 days production stop
Conclusions • The application of 2.8-5.0 g O3/kg SS in the return sludge can significantly reduce the DSVI of activated sludge. • No adverse effect on neither Bio-P nor nitrification rate could be discerned.
2. Ozone for reduction of pharmaceutical residues • Where do pharmaceuticals come from? • Why is it a problem? • Ozone and pharmaceuticals • Pilot-scale results
Where do they come from? • A large portion of the pharmaceuticals used in society ends up at wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). • Individuals • Hospitals • Manufacturing • And others • Most of those are not removed at the WWTP and ends up in the discharge. • From there it´s only a matter of time before they end up in the waterways.
Why is it a problem? • Stable compounds (lingers in the water) • Interactions with wildlife • Combinatory effects (pharmaceutical cocktail) • Eventually they end up in the human biosphere again.
Ozone and Pharmaceuticals • Ozone attacks electronegative areas and breaks up the molecule into smaller pieces. • The resulting compounds are much more biodegradable in sand filters and the like.
Pilot-scale experiment Lundåkraverket WWTP 2012, Landskrona, Sweden
Results of pilot-scale test • 24/46 compounds were found consistently
