Issues on IGST - Mike Bell • Lack of resources • Objectives • Roles / responsibilities IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005
Lack of resources • Deep ocean short-range forecasts are not a priority for most nations (compared to climate change, SI, coastal or ecosystem) • Most groups rely heavily on skills of a small number of people • GODAE Project Office is a potential resource for some tasks – but not all • Implication is that in practice National Plans should and will determine IGST plans. IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005
Objectives for GODAE • Demonstration and transition • Rather fluid – never ending list • Ranking of priorities not clear (may differ between countries) IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005
Roles of IGST • Internal • Sharing experience and results • successful in this – valuable • Helping to clarify objectives • I’ve found this valuable • US (Wilson) has used to leverage funding • International Interface • With alphabet soup of committees • Shop window (symposia; conferences, web) IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005
Roles of Chair • Effectiveness of IGST and its meetings • Judgements on involvement with various activities • email traffic • Generation of GODAE documents • Decisions on priorities • Needs support from IGST on technical details and Project Office on editorial details • Organisation of major events • Final symposium; wind-up of GODAE • Represent GODAE at endless meetings • Could delegate many to IGST members IGST – Exeter - 14 November 2005
