Practical and Industrial Uses • Amides are used widely in industry. • Amides are found in the plastic and rubber industry, paper industry, water and sewage treatment and colour, in crayons, pencils and inks.
Environmental Impact • Amides are all found in rubber, plastic and oils, all of which are hard to break down and disintegrate because: • It takes over a 100 years to break amide bonds under conditions of mild-neutral pH • Amines are usually a product of broken down amide bonds, and are highly toxic to the environment • In landfills, when amides disintegrate the amines that are formed can travel by water from rain into surrounding areas • Amines can also be absorbed by the ground and contaminate groundwater
