American Expeditionary Force • The America’s armed forces were sent over to Europe to fight World War I. • These “doughboys” were led by General Pershing. • General Pershing was the reason why there was an American Expeditionary Force, when he saw that there were simply not enough men to fight. • They were called doughboys because they had white adobe dust on their boots.
Selective Service Act • Drafting all the men they needed for war. • Many men entered because they thought it was the war to end all wars. • At first it was only young men, but as the need for men grew greater, more men were accepted.
Training • It was supposed to be several months for training the soldiers, however often this didn’t happen and men were shipped out directly to war. • To get the men over to Europe, America used the convoy system. Because of the threat of German u-boats passenger ships were surrounded by military boats, destroyers and torpedo boats.
Segregated Units • The Harlem Hellfighters, an African American military unit, earned the highest military award in France, Croix de Guerre. • Americans were unhappy that African Americans were receiving awards so they instead put them in positions such as cooking and cleaning.
