Project Objectives • Use investment in Veterans Park to eliminate blight and catalyze redevelopment • Improve visual, physical, transportation, and social connections between the downtown, FSU, adjoining neighborhoods, and Bragg Blvd. corridor • Integrate redevelopment sites, Veterans Park, ASOM, Freedom Park, existing neighborhoods, and FSU into cohesive district • Provide a clear entry/gateway to the downtown from the northwest
Current Conditions • Poor Connectivity between activity areas • Confusing circulation/disconnected Murchison Road • Unused land locked by infrastructure • Rowan bridge scheduled for replacement • Parks disconnected from each other and downtown • Significant floodway impacts existing businesses
Gateway Concept • Organizes primary streets • Creates high-quality redevelopment sites • Links FSU/ASOM/Vets Park/Downtown Core • Land unlocked for much larger NC Veterans Park • Rowan Commons mixed-use development and public park enhancements • Linear park extension to the east and north • Businesses relocated out of floodway to more visible/accessible locations
