Clarifying Concepts Bilingüismo Se refiere a los diferentes grados de dominio con los que un individuo se comunica en más de una lengua y una cultura, según el contexto en el que se desempeñe.
Lengua Extranjera/Foreign Language La lengua extranjera se aprende principalmente en el entorno escolar o académico, generalmente con baja intensidad horaria. El estudiante no suele adquirir un nivel nativo de competencia comunicativa. Lengua que no se habla en el ambiente inmediato y local. No hay condiciones sociales para su uso permanente en la comunicación.
Segunda Lengua/Second Language Lengua necesaria para las actividades oficiales, comerciales, sociales y educativas. Lengua que se requiere para propósitos comunicativos entre los ciudadanos de un país. Generalmente se adquiere bajo condiciones de necesidad: en la calle y en la vida diaria. Lengua que se adquiere además de la materna, generalmente en la infancia, 4-5 años. Se puede adquirir también en el contexto escolar formal bajo condiciones pedagógicas especialmente favorables, por ejemplo programas intensivos de educación bilingüe.
