Food Label Terms Words such as low, reduced, free and more are now legally defined within nutrition.
Reduced • Means that the product has 25% or less of a nutrient or calorie than the regular product.
Calorie Free • Less than 5 calories
Low Calorie • 40 calories or less
Light or Lite • One third fewer calories or 50% less fat: if more than half the calories are from fat, the fat content must be reduced by 50% or more.
Fat Free • Less than .5 grams of fat
Low Fat 3 grams of fat or less
Sodium • Sodium Free– 35 milligrams or less sodium • Light in sodium– 50% less sodium • Low Sodium– 140 milligrams or less sodium • Very low sodium– less than 50 milligrams sodium
Cholesterol • Cholesterol Free – less than 2 milligrams cholesterol and 2 grams or less saturated fat. • Low Cholesterol – 20 milligrams or less cholesterol and 2 grams or less saturated fat.
