  1. Energy and the Cell

  2. To understand Science you have to understand a few key themes • Matter and Energy • How they interact with each other and the environment • How they move through the environment • Systems • Basic Structure and how to apply to biological concepts • Structure & Function • How does the structure aid in the function? • Change Over Time • Behavior & Interactions

  3. Matter and Energy you need to know for this unit Formulas Must Be Memorized!!!!! Photosynthesis: CO2 + H2O + Energy  C6H12O6 + O2 Cellular Respiration: C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + Energy

  4. Cellular Respiration

  5. Cellular Respiration Where: Occurs in all cells (including plants and animals) Structure: Specifically in mitochondria Function: Converting Glucose into Energy Chemical Formula: C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O + Energy Memorize

  6. Aerobic Respiration Aerobic means: “with oxygen” • Oxygen is always need to ignite something • Respiration is similar to burning a marshmallow Click here for video! Anaerobic means: “without oxygen” • If not oxygen is present, respiration still happens, but it is not as efficient (producing less energy).

  7. 1. What is the source of carbon for cellular respiration? Glucose (C6H12O6) is the carbon source.

  8. 2. Where do Stages 2 and 3 of cellular respiration take place? in mitochondria

  9. Mitochondria Videos

  10. Looking at the specifics Glycolysis • Location: Cytoplasm outside of the mitochondria • 2 ATPs to get reaction going • Gross total = 4 ATPs generated • Net total = 2 ATPs Click Here for Animation

  11. Looking at the specifics Krebs Cycle • Modern name is the “Citrus Acid Cycle” • Location: inside mitochondria • Net total = 2 ATPs Click Here For Animation

  12. Looking at the specifics Electron Transport Chain • Location: inside mitochondria • Net total = 32 ATPs, not 34 Click Here for Link

  13. Energy and the Chemistry of Life • Click Here for Video
