NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY MISSION IN SIKKIM YEAR -2012-13 • Presented by • Food Security & Agriculture Development Department , • Govt. of Sikkim
Profile of Agriculture in Sikkim. • Agriculture and allied field is the backbone of the rural population and their overall security. • Agriculture is practiced in approx 11 % of the total geographical area of the State having 64 % of the people fully dependent on Agriculture for their livelihood. The net cultivated area is about 79,0000 ha. • The geographical location provides optimum conditions for cultivation of wide range of Agriculture and Horticulture crops and animal farming in well settled terraced, mixed farming system. • The area under assured irrigation is merely 5 percent making Sikkim a practically rain -fed state. • The agro-climatic conditions vary from subtropical to Alpine and no single crop or variety can suit all the elevation ranges. • The agro ecological conditions are conducive for loss of soil an nutrients from farming system. Low yield, traditional cultivars continue to dominate the agrarian scenario while State Department is exerting sincere efforts to replace them with improved varieties.
Sikkim as an Organic State • All the agricultural development activities are interwoven in the framework of organic process. • Govt has declared in 2003 to make Sikkim a full-fledged Organic State by 2015. • Total 50,000 hectres are under Organic certification through well planned livelihood schools and Internal Control System. Most of the target areas have already received one and two phase certification. (To make an area organic, three phase organic certificate is must. ) • A separate cell has been created and known as SIkkim Organic Mission to supervise the end to end activities of Organic process. • Uses of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides are highly discouraged and restricted in the State.
