  1. ORGAN systems

  2. Human Body Organization • Cells work with similar cells to create tissues. • Tissues work with similar tissues to create organs. • Organs work with similar organs to create organ systems. • Organ Systems work with similar organ systems to create organisms.

  3. Skeletal System • Supports body and protects internal organs • Includes: bones, cartilage, and ligaments

  4. Muscular System • Produces movement, circulates blood, and heats your body • Includes: skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, cardiac (heart) muscle, and tendons

  5. Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System • Carries oxygen, nutrients, and other needed materials to the cells; carries carbon dioxide and waste away from the cells • Includes: heart, blood, blood vessels

  6. Nervous System • Detects and responds to changes in the environment; transmits information as electrochemical impulses throughout the entire body • Includes: brain, spinal cord, and nerves

  7. Digestive System • Breaks down food into smaller particles that can be used by the body’s cells for energy; disposes of solid wastes • Includes: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine

  8. Excretory/Urinary System • Removes liquid waste from the body • Includes: kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra

  9. Integumentary System • Acts as a barrier against infection and injury from the external environment • Includes: skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands

  10. Respiratory System • Provides oxygen to the body’s cells for cellular respiration; removes carbon dioxide as waste from the body • Includes: mouth, nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs

  11. Immune/Lymphatic System • Protects the body from disease; fights microorganisms • Includes: white blood cells, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, lymph vessels

  12. Endocrine System • Secretes hormones to control growth, development, metabolism, and reproduction; coordinates other organ systems • Includes: pancreas, ovaries (females), testes (male), hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, adrenals

  13. Reproductive System • system of organs within an organism which work together for the purpose of reproduction • Males: produces and delivers sperm • Males Includes: testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, penis • Females: produces eggs and nourishes and shelters the unborn baby • Female Includes: ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina
