  3. Social media is necessary. • Spans all demographics • Where news and issues are shared and discussed (and quickly) • The future of our communications

  4. Who/Where are these people?

  5. What difference does it make in community preparedness? Run! Go! Do! SAVE! Prepare, educate, enable, sustain.

  6. What difference does it make in emergency management? • Prepared communities are more resilient, require a lot less “rooftop rescue” • Communications become as important as first response by integrating them into your culture • Fear/uncertainty  inclusiveness/situational awareness

  7. Social Media fits into every aspect of the EM Cycle How to avoid common area disasters, what potential threats there are Kit supplies, evacuation plans, contact information, etc. Shelter info, when to evacuate, threats, areas to avoid Where to find assistance, reopen dates, behavioral health resources

  8. What to use? • Start with the big players • Know which one is best for your message • Don’t worry about them all at once • It’s okay to be human • No really, it’s okay.

  9. The Big Guys • Short, prompt messages (140 characters) • Continuous updates • #hashtags • Longer, interactive messages • Group dialogue • #hashtags

  10. And then, try these guys • Videos • YouTube: unlimited time • Vine: six seconds • Instagram: 15 seconds • Photos • Instagram • Flickr • Blogs • WordPress • Blogger • All of the Above • Google Plus • Tumblr • Pinterest

  11. Expand Your Professional Network …Along with the “Big Guys”

  12. Why should I use these? • Sustainable • Engaging • Builds credibility • Humanizes our field • Increases our professional network

  13. And if I don’t? • The conversation will happen anyway, without you.

  14. Write this down. • What platforms does my agency need now? • What do we have that we need to use better? • Why do we need these? • What are our obstacles? • Who can help us overcome them? • Where is our authority? • What can I do on my own?
