  1. Welcome ASL 1- Remember test is tomorrow! Written Doorbuster (copy the question and answer): • 1. T or F: Even though we use fingerspelled abbreviations for Kansas, it is possible if you lived near Kansas that you would know a sign for that state. • 2. T or F: State signs are similar to name signs- many of them use the first initial of their name. • 3. T or F: Deaf ASL signers know the city sign for every city in every state. • Finished? Study/cram and get ready for a game competition in your teams!  (we will watch the video once, shortly). States, cities, and technology signs from Unit C (practice for exam tomorrow).

ASL 1 Cities & states game- “Capture the ribbon bookmark”: • Each team needs one states map, dry erase board and marker. • Volunteer, or do “nose goes” to decide who is the first signer  • The signer may use the red MASL! Book for help (pp.78-79, 82) • Signer: fingerspell a random state- the first person to sign it back correctly wins the bookmark. If no one knows it, the signer gets the bookmark. • After 5different states, switch signers (the person on the left goes next). • When states are too easy for your group, switch to cities! The trick: in QUIET only  Here are the possible cities: • Texas Cities: DALLAS, FORT-WORTH, EL-PASO, AMARILLO, LUBBOCK, MIDLAND, ODESSA, SAN-ANTONIO, AUSTIN, CORPUS-CHRISTI, BEAUMONT, LAREDO, HOUSTON, GALVESTON, PASADENA, SUGAR+LAND, BAYTOWN, &ARLINGTON • (p.82) Non-Texas Cities: BOSTON, CHICAGO, NEW-ORLEANS, PHILADELPHIA SAN-FRANCISCO, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON+DC • Who held the bookmark the most when time is up? (I’ve a prize for you ) … • Ready? Shhh!!! Begin!

  4. Welcome ASL 2!Remember, the countries exam is next Wednesday. Written Doorbuster (copy the notes #1-#3 below): • 1. There are Deaf orphanages in Mexico, Dominican Republic, and other countries, where ASL signers from the USA visit often. • 2.Sometimes the children have teachers living at the orphanage who using their country’s sign language (eg. MSL, DRSL),but other times they learn ASL from visitors (if no other sign language is known). • 3.Some governments support signed language, while others try to stop it-but fail, because Deaf people continue to protect their language and sign in every country. • Finished? Look at the countries list, and choose 5 for your group- sign up with Dr. Weast, first come first serve (you will be signing them for a Cultural Activity- instructions on next slide) • Ticket Out: Country signs- then and now

  5. Countries Culture Activity- as a team: • 1. Choose 5 countries from the required list (not the Extra Credit list) • 2. Use an iPad or your personal technology if you prefer, and find a picture or pictures that capture each of your 5 countries (at least 1 picture per country). • 3. Use PicCollage- an app on the iPad, and create a collage(s) of your 5 pictures (if you have several pictures for each country, you can create more collages- no problem!)  • 4. Be sure to add text to label each photo, and tell what is in the photo. • *Create, then *figure out how to sign them, then *present! 

  6. Welcome ASL 3! • Doorbuster (5 min.) : Look over the “Political and Related Signs” list from yesterday (more copies are on front table). • How many can you remember?

  7. Activity: If you could change the world…(Goal: to use/learn Political vocab. Lists) • Your group may all sign all parts, or each person sign at least what is listed below #1-3 • (please write it in English to show on the front screen during signing): • ***Be sure you each sign at least 5 signs from the list  • 1.Explain one fact per person about politics • 2.Each person explains how they feel about that fact (support it, benefits, negative, don’t want, etc.) • 3.Each person then signs “if I could change the world, I would…” possible gloss: ____rh_ IF WORLD ME CHANGE COULD, #DO-DO, … (then answer ) • When you are ready, come up and sign! 
