Il ne croyait pas si bien dire… On estime le nombre d’Amérindiens avant la conquête à plus de soixante dix millions, puis, cent ans plus tard, à moins de cinq millions. Aujourd’hui, ils seraient quarante millions répartis en un millier de groupes ethniques parlant plus de sept cents langues.
