Household Telephone Survey • Phone Survey of residents in TERRA region • Have completed survey • 352 household telephone interviews from a sample of 1027 (overall response rate 34.3%) • Included landlines and cellphones (no household duplication) • Respondents came from all areas of the TERRA region: • Bristol Bay Borough • Dillingham City • Dillingham, Lake, and Peninsula Boroughs: villages • Bethel Census Area • Bethel/Wade Hampton/Yukon Koyukuk Census Area Villages • Approximately 65% of respondents are Alaska Native/Native American
Telephone Survey: Next Steps • Weight responses to reflect region • Report findings on: • Ownership of mobile phones: basic and smartphones • Uses of mobile phones besides voice • Ownership of other electronic devices • laptops, netbooks, e-books or tablets, game systems, etc. • Internet availability at home • Internet uses at home or elsewhere in community • For nonsubscribers: reasons for not subscribing to Internet service • Intent to subscribe to broadband • Intended uses of broadband • Reasons may not subscribe to broadband, etc.
Next Steps for Survey, cont’d • Do cross-tabs on some variables such as: • Ethnicity: Alaska Native vs. other • Education level: High school or less vs. more education • Towns (Dillingham, King Salmon, Bethel) vs. villages • With key indicators such as: • Internet use: subscriptions, applications • Mobile phone ownership and uses • Intent to use broadband and predicted applications • Concerns about Internet service, broadband
Interviews with Key Informants from Businesses and Nonprofits • Purpose: To gain insights into how broadband may contribute to economic activities in the TERRA region • Approximately 25 telephone interviews • Businesses, native corporations and nonprofits, NGOs • Topics: • Current Internet usage and benefits • Predicted uses of broadband and anticipated benefits • Concerns about Internet, broadband services • Open-ended questions re impact on organization and on community.
Literature Review • Requested by Task Force Working Group on Socio-Economic Impacts • Research on broadband and rural development • Focus on Alaska, but including relevant research from other U.S., Canada, Arctic/North, and developing regions • References are illustrative (not exhaustive!) • Have completed draft bibliography with materials on: • Economic Development • Adoption and Outreach • Education • Health Care: Telehealth and Telemedicine • Public Safety
