IB Meeting the Expectations of the Common Core State Standards • “Central elements of the IB education programs, are well matched to the goals for student success sought by the CCSS” • “IB has initiated relationship studies to identify linkages between IB program standards and the CCSS.” • “IB currently offers guidance and professional development to teachers, and administrators as they work towards meeting the demands of both the IB and CCSS.” Expanding Student Access to a Rigorous International Education; An IB position paper on the Common Core State standards (CCSS) (2012)
Common Core State Standards English Language Arts Mathematics Emphasis on mathematical practices Increased focus on algebraic thinking and content in the middle grades Foundational understanding Problem-solving, mathematical reasoning & modeling Cross-content STEM readiness • Balance between informational text and literature • Text complexity • Writing in response to text • Conducting and reporting on research • Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Language • Cross-content literacy
IB and the Common Core Comparative Examples • IB Aim Language A - Students will be able to use language as a vehicle for thought, creativity, reflection, learning, self-expression and social interaction. • CCSS for ELA Anchor Standard - Students will be able to apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening. • IB Aim Mathematics - Students will be able to develop mathematical curiosity and use inductive and deductive reasoning when solving problems • CCSS for Mathematics; Mathematical Practice - Students will be able to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
IB MYP: Building Capacity for Implementation • IB MYP Professional Development • IB MYP Unit Plan Development • Instruction Focus on Learning Targets
IB MYP Professional Development External IB MYP Training: • Heads of School/IB Coordinators • Subject Area Teachers On-Site IB MYP Training: • C & I Training • Full-day training for all middle school staff, 9-6-12 Ongoing: • Monthly team meetings with IB Coordinator • Registration on IB Online Curriculum Center (OCC) • Discussions with IB Consultants
Development of IB MYP Unit Plans MMS/SOMS IB MYP Goal: • Each grade level department team will develop, implement, and revise one MYP unit plan by the end of the 2012-2013 school year. When: • Two Tuesday meetings per month. Training: • Monthly team meeting with IB Coordinator around unit planning. • Teachers registered for and using the IB Online Curriculum Center.
Aligning IB Objectives with the CCSS Subject____Social Studies______ Grade___8___Unit______European Middle Ages_______________ What you want the students to know by the end of this unit (skills & content): The role that religion had and still has in shaping society.Comprehend the impact of the Crusades on then and now from various viewpoints. As a result of the Middle Ages, the idea of government was reformed. What standards correspond to this unit?
Development of IB MYP Unit Plans • Stage 1: Integrate significant concept, area of interaction and unit question
Development of IB MYP Unit Plans • Stage 1: Integrate significant concept, area of interaction and unit question
Instructional Focus on Learning Targets Learning targets: • What a student will know or be able to do as a result of engaging in instruction. Goal: • Faculty will create clear, measurable targets aligned with national and state standards. • Elevate level of thinking required by target from understanding to analysis, evaluation, and creation. Why? • Instruction required by IB MYP and Common Core demands higher-level thinking, inquiry, and evaluation of multiple viewpoints. When? • Monthly faculty meetings
The SOMSD middle school staff will integrate the IB learner profile and Areas of Context (Interaction) into student learning experiences. (Domain 1, components a and e, Framework for Teaching.) 2012-2013 Building Work
Writing about being an open minded learner, this 6th grade student noted that the ideas of her classmate’s were, “…put together with my own ideas to come up with an answer that was correct. In math we have had a couple of debates about answers and I have to listen to other people and hear what they had to say. Also in science when we were making our boats we had to listen to each other.”
Coaching Ties It All Together IB MYP Concepts • Promotes life-long learners. • Connects classroom learning to the world. • Balance in practices of inquiry, action and reflection. • Address complex challenges by developing systems that clearly communicate expectations. • Authentic assessments to support students demonstrating what they know and do. Components of Good Instruction • Is student-inquiry based • Authentic/real • Students can make connections • Makes learning relevant – answers why • Develops critical thinking skills • Allows and promotes reflection
IB MYP Framework is Inquiry Based Ask Investigate Reflect Create Discuss
We Ask Questions As Teachers we have asked: • “How does a clear, student friendly, and measurable learning target push student achievement?” • “How does a strong unit question support student learning in the MYP framework?” • “How does my plan for assessment allow for students to demonstrate mastery of the standards associated with my MYP unit of study?” Selected guiding questions from in-house PD this year
We Ask Questions Students will ask and answer: • How can the design process solve humanity’s problems? • Where are we in the Universe? • How can we use statistics to make informed judgments about our community? • How do holiday celebrations reflect and / or represent cultural values? • What are the rewards and consequences of not conforming? Sample MYP Unit Questions
We Investigate As Teachers, we research, deepen content knowledge through Professional Development, explore best practices. As Leaders, we developed Theories of Action: • “If we create, plan, and deliver lessons rooted in clear, standards- aligned learning targets, then we will see an increase in the level of student achievement.” • “If we implement the MYP at a high level, we will narrow the achievement gap while simultaneously pushing the achievement of all students.”
We Investigate Through investigation, we turn curiosity into action. Higher levels of engagement drives the gathering of information.
We Create As Teachers we are… • Aligning our units of study and lessons to the MYP framework • Creating authentic experiences for students to understand the learner profile
We Discuss As Teachers we: • Sharebest practices • Cultivate a set shared practices • Integration of the Learner Profile • Learning Targets
We Discuss Our students: • Know how the learner profile lives in the daily classroom experience and can articulate this with peers and teachers. • Know and can articulate the expected instructional outcomes of a given lesson with their peers and teachers, and are beginning to self-assess their own progress
