LINDA LENTIN K-8 CENTER MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR 2012 MR. MONTES DE OCA SCIENCE FAIR COORDINATOR
WHY A SCIENCE FAIR? • SUPPORTS COMMON CORE STANDARDS • SC.8.N.1.1 • DEFINE A PROBLEM FROM THE SCIENCE CURRICULUM USING APPROPRIATE REFERENCE MATERIALS TO SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING, PLAN AND CARRY OUT SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS OF VARIOUS TYPES, SUCH AS SYSTEMATIC OBSERVATIONS OR EXPERIMENTS, IDENTIFY VARIABLES, COLLECT AND ORGANIZE DATA, INTERPRET DATA IN CHARTS, TABLES AND GRAPHICS, ANALYZE INFORMATION, MAKE PREDICTIONS, AND DEFEND CONCLUSIONS.
Science Fair Projects provide students with opportunities for extended investigations and application of science principles. • Students design their own learning environments and are encouraged to identify and use resources outside of school.
GENERAL INFORMATION • All projects must be accompanied by a science board NO LARGER THAN 36”X48”, a log or data book, research paper, and abstract. • The project can involve actual experimentation or a research paper based on current scientific research or study. It should not be simply a report, description, a model or system (even an advanced one) from someone else’s plans or prior work.
The top scoring students and their projects from Linda Lentin Science Fair will be invited to enter the Miami-Dade Regional Science Fair. The top projects from that fair will be eligible for the State Science Fair. • Each year over 1,500 student finalists earn the right to attend the Intel ISEF as a result of winning an Intel ISEF-affiliated fair at a local, regional, or national level. Intel ISEF finalists compete for over $3 million in awards and prizes and were judged on their creative ability and scientific thought, as well as the thoroughness, skill, and clarity shown in their projects.
SCIENCE PROJECT RULES • All students are expected to take part in the Science Fair. Entries must follow all Regional Science Fair rules. • Each student in grade 6-8 must complete an experiment or research paper as academically required by their teacher. • No more than two students may work together as a team on the same poster board project. • All projects must be in the form of an experiment or a research paper based on a current scientific research study. All others will be disqualified.
Parents are allowed to assist with ideas and offer advice but the work must be done by the student. For more information on rules, procedures, fees, and regional fair, go to http://science.dadeschools.net/scienceFair/default.html
The use of vertebrate animals in the experiment is prohibited. • All experiments that use potentially hazardous biological agents are prohibited. • Dangerous chemicals, drugs, open flames, and electrical equipment may not be displayed. • The school reserves the right to reject projects which are unsafe and unsuitable for display or experimentation.
All projects must submit a Risk assessment Form 3 describing the safety measures taken during experimentation. If no safety measures are necessary you still need to complete as appropriate. • A Checklist for Adult Sponsor Form, Student Checklist, Research Plan and Approval Forms must be completed prior to any experimentation. • Any projects involving human participants must have the required Human Participants and Human Informed Consent Forms filled out appropriately.
