Activities since last Report • CLA 08 Istanbul • CLA Refresher course in Slovenia • CLA Refresher course in Poland
CLA 08 LANGUAGE ACADEMY ISTANBUL • July 15 to July 26 in Haydarpasa Dormitory , Kadikoy, Istanbul, Turkey (travel day on each end). Faculty and Staff 13-27 July 2008 • 72 Students (55 English, 17 French) • 18 Nations represented, including 6 PfP countries • 15 staff members from 5 different countries (CN 4, FR 4, UK 3, USA 2, IT 1)
REFRESHER COURSES • Slovenia, September 2008, 10 students from 4 different countries • Poland, February 2009, 14 students from Poland and the Czech Republic • UK provided instruction
2009 LANGUAGE ACADEMY CLAC approves facilities in Bulgaria for CLA 09; (see form) Current plan is from July 24 to August 6 at the “Charalitza” National Military Training Centre, Sofia, Bulgaria (travel day on each end). Faculty and Staff 22 July 7 August 2009. NATO funding expected to provide reimbursement for PfP and MD countries students’ expenses NATO IMS – C&RS reimbursement funding anticipated for up to € 5000.00 to assist purchasing academic materials and student costs for PfP/MD students only. Probably to switch to NATO ACT for FY 2010. CIOR scholarships needed for students from non-PfP/MD countries (see form) NCO students accepted if meet other criteria. One instructor in 2008 was NCO. (see application forms) Course announcements to be sent soon to NATO, NATO partners, PfP and MD countries. Increased effort to invite MD countries. (NATO Prime, NATO ACT conference) Shipping of academic materials from one CLA location to the next CLA location remains a concern. VP help with MOD’s.
NEXT LANGUAGE ACADEMIES • Invitation received from Moldova for future CLA. (Estonia, Latvia, Poland? Interested?) • CLAC will consider all written bids for future CLA (courses and refreshers). CLAC will have recommendation available to CIOR Council at Summer Congress. • Poland and the Czech Republic have indicated a willingness to host future CLA Refresher courses. Written bids confirming details need to be addressed to CLAC and copied to the Presidency. • An additional French language instructor would be welcome (Canada, Belgium)

CLAOPERATIONS MANUAL and CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS • Refresher Course guidelines greatly expanded to provide specific Host Nation Criteria • CLA Host Nation Section and Annex have been updated to provide more specific guidance to Host Nation for CLA • Cost calculation spreadsheet updated for use by Host Nations in determining the costs of holding a CLA course • Skill level testing, to be given at the end of the course to measure the levels of students’ language training, is still being studied and coordinated. • French Military Language Certifications given to volunteer testers. • A copy of the updated CIOR Language Academy Operations Manual will be provided via electronic distribution
